The biggest question about the joint Israeli/US attack on Iran has to be “how does this end”.
In my opinion it is simply delusionally to believe (as Trump purportedly does) that the leadership of the Iranian theocratic dictatorship will at some point surrender or give in to his demands that they relinquish their efforts to obtain nuclear weapons and allow him (Trump) to dictate what they can do with their oil. I also think that it is naively optimistic to simultaneously expect the Iranian people to once again rise up to overthrow the dictatorship and to hope that the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) which very recently massacred thousands of protesters will stand down and let the government fall.
It is what is often called a quagmire. (cue to the music of Pete Seeger singing “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy”.
At some point, Iran will run out of missile launchers, and the US and Israel will run out of military targets to destroy.
I fear the Trump will not be able (or willing) to declare the war a success without having achieved any of his stated goals.
Israel will be more than happy to declare a cease fire and rightfully claim that the dynamics of the region are dramatically changed without Iran, Hamas or Hezbollah able to threaten its existence. Iran’s dictatorship will be happy to claim victory in that they survived everything that the “Great Satan” could throw at them at were still in control. But what will Trump do?
I pray that he will not try to send in soldiers to dislodge the Iranian theocrats.
